2018

February 11 – March 11, 2018

Esalen, CA – Growing Sea Legs in Samsara: Mindfulness in Challenging Times – A Residential Program – Bill & Susan Morgan

Living skillfully in these challenging times requires sensitivity, discernment, and wise action. Mindfulness meditation is a vehicle that can cultivate and strengthen these qualities, yet despite the growing popularity of mindfulness in our culture, much continues to be lost in translation, and the depth and power of these practices have not been made fully accessible to our present-day context.

There are two major emphases in this course: First, we will explore ways to enrich and enliven mindfulness practice on the cushion. Second, our practice will radiate out into mindfulness in action.

April 11 – 15, 2018

Barre, MA – Working with Afflictive Mind States: For Mental Health Professionals – Bill & Susan Morgan

In our work both as caregivers and meditators, challenging mind states are part of the landscape. In Theravadin Buddhism these are known as the five hindrances. These universally experienced mind states occlude and obstruct clear seeing and ease of well-being. Often, however, our avoidant or aversive attitudes toward these emotional states create more tension and dis-ease in our practice. During this retreat we will turn toward what is difficult, and through reflection and guided meditation, we will learn to mindfully explore and more effectively relate to these difficult affective states.

Vallecitos, NM – An Intensive Mindfulness Retreat for Mental Health Professionals: Cultivating the Inner Holding Environment – Bill Morgan, PsyD, Susan Morgan, MSN, RN, CS, and Ronald Siegel, PsyD

Many in our field have been studying mindfulness and its clinical applications for years but have not found time for more intensive meditation practice. Others appreciate the opportunity to refresh their meditation practice with like-minded colleagues. By deliberately stepping out of everyday life and into a retreat environment, the subtle habit patterns of heart and mind are more easily accessed, and mindfulness can begin to deepen.

This week we will study and practice setting up the posture of the practice, learning how to create and sustain an environment conducive to making progress in mindfulness meditation. We will offer a variety of instructions and guided meditations designed to create a personally meaningful and enriching environment in which mindfulness practice may flourish.

Vallecitos, NM – An Intensive Mindfulness Retreat for Mental Health Professionals: Working With Afflictive Mind States and Their Antidotes – Bill Morgan, Susan Morgan, Jan Surrey

The world is on fire, and more than ever it is important for caregivers to take time to restore and replenish. Many in our field have been studying mindfulness and its clinical applications for years but have not prioritized more intensive meditation practice. By deliberately stepping out of everyday life and into a pristine retreat environment, the subtle habit patterns of heart and mind are more easily accessed, and mindfulness can begin to deepen in an enlivening manner.

This week, with like-minded colleagues, we will explore afflictive mind states that plague us all. How can we find our way to right relationship with them? How can we be skillful with these states within our own mind? How can we be skillful with others? Through instruction, guided meditations, dyadic and small group practices these questions will be investigated.

Joining us for this exploration is Janet Surrey who has studied and practiced extensively in the Vipassana tradition and, in recent years, incorporated Insight Dialogue into her work. Insight Dialogue is an interpersonal mindfulness practice resting on the foundation of silent practice in the Theravada Vipassana tradition. Together we will focus on challenging mind states and their antidotes.

Springfield, NH – The Art of Relating Mindfully – Bill & Susan Morgan

Freshening up our Relationship: A Couples Retreat
We often subscribe to the myth that the right relationship will fix everything; that meeting the right person will solve most of our problems. Soon we start to take our relationships for granted and assume that they will maintain themselves. We discover that intimate relationships are not self-renewing. Like gardens, they need to be watered, weeded, fertilized and tended. If this does not happen, appreciation for our partner and our loving connection begin to weaken. The heart grows less sensitive. We erect self-protective walls in defense from hurt and vulnerability. Trapped in painful and repetitive dances we each can feel alone, unappreciated, unsafe, unimportant, suffocated, unloved, inadequate and more. You are not alone. We all find ourselves in these tangles from time to time in our relationships, and they are painful. Even though we may make some efforts to nurture our relationship, an occasional deep cleaning is needed.

This workshop offers a chance to remember, renew and refresh your relationship. Here you will have the opportunity to relax, reflect and re-connect with your partner. We will aim to widen our compassion to include more of our own vulnerabilities and those of our partner, and to deepen our capacity to both offer and receive love. Together we will learn strategies for avoiding these tangles and getting out of them more quickly once they arise.
